 Information about feeding habits and host-plants is given for 24 species of insects reared from the stem or leaves of wetland herbaceous monocots, primarily Carex lacustris Willd. and Phalaris arundinacea L., in southern Quebec. Nineteen species of Diptera in eight families (1 Dolichopodidae, 2 Otitidae, 1 Anthomyzidae, 1 Agromyzidae, 1 Chamaemyiidae, 1 Sphaeroceridae, 11 Chloropidae, 1 Scathophagidae), three Lepidoptera in the families Cosmopterigidae, Elachistidae, and Noctuidae, and two weevils (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) were reared from four species of host plants. Seven species are phytophagous primary invaders, thirteen are secondary invaders (mostly saprophagous) inside the burrows of primary invaders, two are predators of aphids and other invertebrates living on the leaves of the plants, and two have unknown feeding habits.

Check-list of 88 species of Dolichopodidae (Diptera: Empidoidea) known to the fauna of Bulgaria is represented. New data for 11 Dolichopodid species are given, too. Nine of them and genus Hypophyllus are new to the Bulgarian entomofauna. Seven species are new to the Balkan Peninsula and two species (Dolichopus albipalpus and Dolichopus longisetosus) are new to the fauna of Europe. The number of Bulgarian Dolichopodidae species reach to 97 with this report.

 The Sciapodinae of New Caledonia (Diptera: Dolichopodidae).

The Sciapodinae (Diptera: Dolichopodidae) of New Caledonia are revised. The subfamily comprises 55 species, 53 newly described. The fauna is highly endemic, with 53 of the 55 species confined to New Caledonia. The Gondwanan genus Parentia, also known from Australia and New Zealand, includes 17 new species, in the agama Group (Parentia agama, P. argenticauda, P. bourgoini, P. incomitata, P. lamellata, P. tricenta and P. webbi), the lydiae Group (Parentia bourail, P. caudisetae, P. hollowayi, P. lydiae, P. october, P. ouenguip, P. paniensis, and P. sarramea), and the do Group (Parentia do and P. pernodensis). The endemic New Caledonian genus Lapita is newly described, and includes 35 species, 34 new, in four species groups defined by derived characters, and a residue of 17 species which show a mosaic of character states: the noumeana Group (Lapita noumeana (Bigot), L. couleensis, L. duo, L. kanakorum, and L. laniensis, and L. nishidai), the irwini Group (L. irwini, L. schlin!
 geri; and L. ternata), the boucheti Group (L. boucheti, L. cudo, L. expirata and L. yate), the kraussi Group (L. kraussi, L. mou, L. pouebo, and L. sedlacekorum), and the following: Lapita acanthotarsus, L. bouloupari; L. caerula, L. chazeaui, L. dogny, L. dugdalei, L. dumbea, L. inhsa, L. orstomorum, L. ponerihouen, L. raveni, L. rembai, L. rivularis, L. semita, L. spilota, L. sylvatica, L. tillierorum, and L. yahoue. The genus Lapita is strongly convergent with Melanesian Chrysosoma, but appears to be derived independently within New Caledonia from an ancestor close to Parentia. The genus Helixocerus, previously known with a single Samoan Island species, now includes a new species in New Caledonia, H. koghis. The newly described coastal species, Abbemyia baylaci, occurs widely in the central Pacific, the Society, Marquesas, and Tuamotu groups, Vanuatu and New Caledonia. The widespread paleotropical tramp species, Chrysosoma leucopogon (Wiedemann) occurs throughout lowland New Caledonia. A faunal analysis shows that 38% of the species are known from only one site (all representing single collecting events), while 69% of the entire fauna are known from three or fewer sites. This suggests a high number of local endemic species and/or inadequate sampling.

 The purpose of this application, under Article 23.9.3 of the Code, is to conserve the name Pelastoneurus Loew, 1861 for a genus of predaceous flies in the family DOLICHOPODIDAE. This is a diverse and widespread genus of over 100 species, which are distributed in the Nearctic, Neotropical, Afrotropical and Oriental regions. The name is threatened by the little used senior synonym Paracleius Bigot, 1859.

 The Neotropical genus Syntomoneurum Becker is revised. The genus is defined within the subfamily Dolichopodinae on the basis of the possession of a strong basiventral seta on the fore femur, a single notopleural seta, and very reduced pulvilli on the midleg and hindleg in both sexes. Males also possess a cluster of 2-3 strong setae on both the fore femur and mid coxa. One new species, Syntomoneurum giganteum Brooks is described and the three previously known species (S. alatum Becker, S. anale Parent, S. beckeri Parent) are redescribed. A lectotype is designated for S. alatum. A key to the species is provided. Evidence supporting the placement of Syntomoneurum in the subfamily Dolichopodinae near Tachytrechus Haliday is discussed.

This first inventory of Los Monegros region gives 22 species of Dolichopodidae of which 9 are new for Spain: Sciopus longulus, Chryptophleps kerteszi, Medetera gussakowski, M. sylvestris, M. saxatilis, Syntormon pumilis and three will be described: one Medetera and two Sciopus. Some facts on the trap efficiency and phenology of the most abondant species are given.

 Evaluating diversity: a baseline study comparing the diversity of the order Diptera in two distinct sites in the Yucatan Peninsula of Mexico.

 A baseline study of the insect order Diptera (flies) was conducted in the Yucatan Peninsula of Mexico (Latitude: 20.0 N Longitude: 90.0 W) in which diversity was compared between two distinct sites: (1) the land immediately surrounding a former sugar cane plantation associated with the Hacienda Tabi (maintained by Fundacion Cultural de Yucatan) and (2) the undisturbed dry tropical forest at the Helen Moyers Biological Reserve located at Kiuic (maintained by Millsaps College). It was hypothesized that a richer diversity would be present at the Kiuic site, which is relatively undisturbed, compared to the Tabi site. The following 17 Dipteran families were recorded for both sites: Tabanidae, Stratiomyidae, Asilidae, Culicidae, Mycetophilidae, Tachinidae, Muscidae, Tipulidae, Anthomyiidae, Bombyliidae, Tanypezidae, Syrphidae, Sciaridae, Pipunculidae, Chironomidae, Dolichopodidae, and Conopidae. The Kiuic site also reported 6 additional families: Phoridae, Heleomyzidae, Bibionidae, Scatopsidae, Scenopinidae, and Mydidae. The Tabi site, however, yielded eight additional families: Sarcophagidae, Ropalomeridae, Drosophilidae, Therevidae, Ceratopogonidae, Sciomyzidae, Calliphoridae, and Platystomatidae. Since many of the families individual to the Tabi site are common, these findings were interpreted not to indicate a significant difference in diversity between the two sites. For more conclusive data, more work must be done in the future, both in the identification of these insects to species, and in the studying of specific families.

Phylogenetic relationships and placement of the Empidoidea (Diptera: Brachycera) based on 28S rDNA and EF-1[alpha] sequences.

 The phylogenetic relationships within the Eremoneura (Empidoidea + Cyclorrhapha) have been controversial. The monophyly of the Empidoidea, as well as the position and rank of higher-level empidoid clades remains unresolved despite numerous analyses using morphological data. In addition, the origin of the Cyclorrhapha and their relationship to the Empidoidea continues to be debated. We present the results of a molecular phylogenetic analysis using nucleotide sequences collected from 28S ribosomal DNA (rDNA) and elongation factor-1[alpha] (EF-1[alpha]) genes. All currently recognized empidoid families and subfamilies, many lower cyclorrhaphan families (including Opetiidae), and several asiloid outgroups are represented in this study. Unweighted and weighted parsimony, as well as maximum likelihood analyses were applied to individual data partitions and a combined data set. Our results support the monophyly of both Empidoidea and Cyclorrhapha (including Opetia), as well as th!
 eir sister-group relationship. Within Empidoidea we find support for the following: 1) Chvala's (1983) proposal to divide Empidoidea into five families; 2) Atelestidae as the basal empidoid lineage; and 3) monophyly of Microphoridae + Dolichopodidae.

 Electrophorella, a new genus of empidoid flies in the subfamily Microphorinae, is described from Baltic amber. Electrophorella is placed in the tribe Parathalassiini based on possession of a single-segmented stylus and several additional features. It is distinguished from other parathalassiines by the very short ornmatrichia of the eyes and by the absence of the base of M2 (anterior portion of crossvein m-cu) such that M2 appears to curve continuously as a branch off of CuA1. Two new species, Electrophorella baltica spec. nov. and Electrophorella grimaldii spec. nov. are described. Phylogenetic relationships of extant and fossil Microphorinae, and the closely related Dolichopodidae are analyzed on the basis of discovery of this new genus.

The results of a revision of B.A. Gimmerthal's collection are presented. 45 dolichopodid specimens were checked up and 27 species were identified. The majority of specimens were determined by B.A. Gimmerthal correctly. Only four dolichopodid species from the B.A. Gimmerthal's collection have reliable records from Latvia.

Some wetland Diptera of a disused brick-pit.

 Diptera records were collated for several years of collecting at a disused brick-pit containing many temporary pools and a lake. The fauna included many uncommon species and a few coastal species whose presence is attributed to salinity from the clay. The numbers of Ephydridae and Dolichopodidae from areas with different hydrological characteristics are highest in areas of shallow pools and seasonal inundation and lowest at the shore of the lake. Species that are normally abundant in surrounding wetlands are scarce in the pit, suggesting that the low nutrient status of the water makes this site unusual in the nutrient-rich arable countryside of the Fens.

 The morphology of the coxa and trochanter was studied in 205 species from 68 fly families to compare these structures with respect to ability to fly in a streamlined posture, with the middle legs pointing forward and pressed to the thorax. Only Brachycera are able to attain this posture. The forward turn of the coxa at this position is hindered by the junction of the coxa with the pleuron. Recovery of mobility is gained in two ways. (1) By reduction of the contact zone between coxa and pleurite, as in Asiloidea, Bombyloidea, and Empidoidea. Within these flies, the streamlined posture was recorded in Bombyliidae and in a robber-fly, Laphria flava. Others fly with their middle legs straddled laterally or trailing backwards. (2) Longitudinal splitting of the coxa into three coxites provides intracoxal mobility in most Tabanoidea and Cyclorrhapha. The hind and medial coxites rotate about the front coxite and change the coxo-trochanteral axis, thus compensating for restricted p!
 rotraction. Separation of the hind coxite appears in primitive Tabanoidea, and a separate middle coxite was found in several families among the Nematocera. The streamlined posture was recorded in horse-flies, stratiomyids, and in many Cyclorrhapha except Micropezidae and Hippoboscidae. There is morphological evidence for a possible secondary fusion of coxites at least in Dolichopodidae and Opetidae as well as for the origin of Cyclorrhapha from a miniature ancestor.

The fauna and ecology of predatory flies of the family Dolichopodidae were studied in natural habitats and agrocenoses around the Velikie Luki City in May[long dash]August. Eighty seven species of dolichopodids are recorded for Pskov Province including 3 species previously known here. Achalcus melanotrichus, Lamprochromus strobli, Hercostomus nanus, and Argyra hoffmeisteri are newly recorded from Russia. Complexes of hygrophilous and dendrophilous species are distinguished. New data on the adult emergence terms and habitat preferences are reported. Medetera tristis, Neurigona abdominalis, Systenus bipartitus, S. pallipes, Chrysotus gramineus and some other species live on apple trees near Velikie Luki.

 The majority of Dolichopodidae species collected on the Brandberg were trapped using light traps as opposed to Malaise traps and yellow pan traps. Eight Brandberg species represent only a small part of the Namibian fauna: Asyndetus virgatus Curran, Campsicnemus caffer Curran, Chrysotus inconspicuus Loew, Hydrophorus praecox Lehmann, Medetera capensis Curran, Medetera sp. nov., Sympycnus munroi Curran, Thrypticus kataevi Grichanov. They represent seven genera and four subfamilies: Diaphorinae, Hydrophorinae, Medeterinae and Sympycnynae. The numbers of individuals trapped were considerably more numerous in the surrounding Namib plains than on the Brandberg itself. Both recorded species of Medetera Fisher von Waldheim were only represented in samples from high altitudes.

The genera Teuchophorus and Peloropeodes are recorded for Tropical Africa for the first time. Three different rearing methods for predacious Diptera of genus Medetera Fisher von Waldheim (Dolichopodidae), found in greenhouses in Lombardia - Italy, are described. The first one is the modification of the method already used to rear Coenosia Meigen (Diptera Muscidae). The others have come from the necessity to resolve some questions arose during the test and also to simplify much more the alimentary chain to make much more easy an eventual mass rearing.

The life cycle of a Medetera living in greenhouses have been investigated with rearing tests about each single instar, and making some complete rearing. The time development have been identified, and the factors that influence them have been studied. So it's emerged the importance of the "quality" of preys on the rapidity of the larval development. The sum of all tests give the indispensable informations about the climatic conditions and the alimentary chain better to realise an optimal rearing of this specie.

Neurigona viridis VAN DUZEE and Neurigona thoracica VAN DUZEE are transferred to Viridigona. Neurigona cinereicollis VAN DER WuLP and Neurigona lamprostethus PHLIPPI are regarded as nomina dubia. Viridigona is differentiated from the closely related genus Neurigona mainly by plesiomorphic conditions such as a metallic green body, and by autapomorphies involving the reduction or loss of leg setation.

The Neotropical species of the new genus Bickelomyia gen. nov. (Diptera: Dolichopodidae) from Central America are revised. A new tribe Neurigonini is defined. Diagnoses and keys to genera and species are given. Bickelomyia contains the following species: B. canescens spec. nov., B. flaviseta spec. nov., B. setipyga spec. nov., and B. subcanescens spec. nov. from Mexico and B. nigriseta spec. nov. from Costa Rica. A phylogenetic analysis of the genus is presented.

 A preliminary report is given on the marine Dolichopodidae from the Thai coasts of the Andaman Sea and the Gulf of Siam. Fifteen species in 7 genera are identified. Keys to the genera and the species are provided together with short diagnoses to the species. Seven species are described as new: Cymatopus thaicus, new species, Thinolestris thaica, new species, Thinophilus nitens, new species, Th. parmatus, new species, Thinophilus setiventris, new species, Nanothinophilus hoplites, new species and Phacaspis mitis, new species.

Both Empididae and Dolichopodidae have a well-developed cibarial pump and differ drastically from most Asilomorpha by the structure of the cephalic foregut. In species of both families, a portion of the foregut, topographically corresponding to the pharynx, is oesophagus-like: its intima is nonsclerotized, thin and folded; lumen cross-section is rounded; epithelial and muscular layers are well developed. A partial reduction or complete disappearance of pharyngeal dilators occurs. In Empis, Hilara and Rhamphomyia (Empidudae), pharyngeal dilators remain, but are weak. In Platypalpus (Tachydrominae) and Dolichopus species they are absent. At the same time, degeneration (up to disappearance) of pre- and postpharyngeal sphincters takes place. The pharyngeal and oesophageal portions of the foregut in Platypalpus and Dolichopus may be distinguished only by details of their wall structure. The data obtained suggest that the type of the cephalic food canal characteristic of all Cyc!
 lorrhapha originates already in higher Asilomorpha. "Disappearance" of the pharynx is likely a result of its gradual likening to the oesophagus, but not of its reduction.

There is presented a list of distribution for 84 species from the whole country. Medetera murina is recorded for the first time and other 13 species are mentioned the second time in Romania. Diaphorus unguiculatus, Dolichopus falcatus and Ludovicius impar are very rare in their whole palaearctic area. The Maramures depression becomes richer with I I species not yet recorded from this zone. For many species there are mentioned not only the repartition and phenology but also their biotopes, for some ones there is recorded the opposite sex; for 5 species there are presented also drawings based on the material.

It is described the female of the species Syntormon silvianum Parvu 1989, a comparison with the male is made and its Palaearctic distribution is presented. It is established the presence of the species Hercostomus plagiatus (Loew, 1857) in Romania (with drawings after a recent material), making a comparison with H. verbekei Pollet, 1993. Information on the biotopes of the two species are enclosed.

 The conservation value of grassland and reed marsh habitats in Belgium was determined on the basis of dolichopodid communities (Diptera: Dolichopodidae). Four grassland and one reed marsh sites within the 'Bourgoyen-Ossemeersen' Nature Reserve (B.O.) (Ghent) were sampled with white water traps from March 1993 until March 1994. Subsequently, these soil faunas were compared with those of reed marsh habitats in 'Het Meetjeslandse Krekengebied' (M.K.) sampled in 1990. Comparisons of species communities were carried out by means of multivariate analysis techniques. The DCA and CCA on the B.O. sites produced a clear separation between the grassland and the reed marsh communities. Light intensity and soil humidity were among the most important factors determining species distributions. The comparison between the B.O. and M.K. communities revealed that sampling sites were clustered according to their geographical location rather than to habitat type. Overall species richness and diversity was not significantly different between grasslands and reed marshes. However, conservation quality estimates of the sites using the Site Conservation Quality Index (SCQI) indicated that reed marshes comprise a considerably larger number of rare and Red Data Book species. Moreover, besides typical reed marsh-inhabiting species, reed marshes also house species with other ecological affinities sometimes in rather high abundance. As a result, reed marshes are considered highly valuable for the survival of several wetland dolichopodid species.

The dolichopodid flies (Diptera: Dolichopodidae) of the peat-bogs of Canton Ticino and Moesano (Calanca and Mesolcina, GR), Switzerland. - During the period 1990-1993 an ecological and faunistical study of several groups of arthropods was carried out using different sampling methods at 20 sites (peat-bogs of different typology and their contact zone) in the southern Swiss Alps (Ticino, Grisons) at altitudes between 275 and 2020 m a.s.l. 73 species of dolichopodid flies were recorded, 2 of which (Hercostomus sp. A and Dolichopus sp. B) are new to science. Characteristic species (tyrphobiontic) are represented by Chrysotus obscuripes, Dolichopus annulipes, D. lepidus, Hydrophorus albiceps and Campsicnemus compeditus, which show high preference for Sphagnum-habitats or oligotrophic ponds. Other tyrphophilic species are mainly represented by Dolichopus vitripennis, D. atripes, Hercostomus angustifrons, Hydrophorus rogenhoferi, Campsicnemus mamillatus and Dolichopus p. lepidus.!
 Results show that the dolichopodid communities of the investigated peat-bogs are also composed of eurytopic and tyrphoxenic species, which penetrate from the surrounding area (eurytopic and tyrphoxenic species compose up to 75% of the communities in the small peat-bogs, which show a bad state of preservation). Some tyrphobiontic and tyrphophilic species of the northern part of Switzerland and central Europe (e.g. Raphium longicorne, Ectomus alpinus, Hydrophorus nebulosus, Dolichopus geniculatus, D. atratus) could not be found: the lack of these characteristic species is explained by biogeographical (southern margin of the area of many peat-bog species), topographical (small dimensions and great isolation of the biotopes) or ecological (climate) reasons.

Up to now the long-legged flies (Diptera, Empidoidea, Dolichopodidae) represent a poorly investigated insect group in Latvia. In thus article all recent faunal data and all known literature references on dolichopodid species from Latvia are given. 68 of stated dolichopodid species are new for Latvia. The provisional list of dolichopodid species of Latvia (142 species) is composed of both, detailed analysis of literature references and on determination results of sampled material.

Eversible pleural sacs were recently discovered in &[integral]e&[integral]e of European species of Rhamphomyia Meigen 1822 (Empididae). In live specimens, they are showily orange. SEM photos show a peculiar surface with numerous setae arranged in whorls. It remains unclear whether they are simply decoration or in combination with pheromones to increase female attractivity. Appendages of male Dolichopodinae are digitate and not covered by hairs or setae. They seem to be restricted to the subfamily Dolichopodinae and probably work together with pheromones.

Development and distribution of predators and parasitoids during two consecutive years of an Ips typographus (Col., Scolytidae) infestation.

 The development of the natural enemy complex, its within-tree distribution and the resulting mortalities imposed on bark beetles were investigated during two consecutive years (1994, 1995) at the peak of an Ips typographus infestation. For this reason bolts from infested spruce trees were incubated until the inhabiting insects had emerged. Some 17 000 antagonists were identified and found to belong to 16 predatory and 14 parasitic insect species. Among the predators the Dolichopodidae (Dip.) were most abundant, while among the parasitoids the Pteromalidae (Hym.) ranked first. Parasitoids preferred the upper tree parts, while predators were more abundant in the lower parts. Total bark beetle mortality was assessed based on the literature data on the per capita consumption of the antagonistic larvae. In the first year, the most destructive group were the dolichopodid flies, killing three to seven times more bark beetle larvae than the second ranking Lonchaeidae (Dip.) and th!
 e Pteromalidae. In the second year, the pteromalid parasitoids killed 2.5 times more larvae than the dolichopodids. Total bark beetle survival was assessed to decrease from 46 to 18% in the course of the 2 years.

Dipteran predators of simuliid blackfiles: A worldwide review.

 Haematophagous female blackflies (Diptera: Simuliidae) are serious biting pests and obligate vectors of vertebrate pathogens, namely filarial Dirofilaria, Mansonella, Onchocerca and protozoal Leucocytozoon. Immature stages of Simuliidae inhabit lotic waterways, the sessile larvae filter-feeding and often forming a large proportion of the benthic biomass, usually aggregated in well-oxygenated sections of streams, rivers, waterfalls and spillways. Simuliid control practices depend on larvicidal chemicals, biological products (bacteria, nematodes) and environmental modification. The potential use of predators for biological control of Simuliidae has not been exploited. Predators of Simuliidae include examples of at least 12 families of Diptera and other predaceous arthropods (Crustacea and insects: Coleoptera, Odonata, Plecoptera, Trichoptera), invertebrates (notably Turbellaria), as well as browsing fish. Diptera impacting upon simuliid populations comprise mainly Chironomidae, Empididae and Muscidae, although several other families (Asilidae, Dolichopodidae, Phoridae, Drosophilidae, Scathophagidae) play a significant role as predators. Details of predator and prey species and life stages are presented, by zoogeographical region, including the prevalence of cannibalism among Simuliidae.

Courtship in long-legged flies (Diptera: Dolichopodidae): Function and evolution of signals.

 Analyzing the courtship behavior of long-legged flies (Diptera: Dolichopodidae), we focus on the evolutionary development of courtship signals. Long-legged flies may serve as a model for this evolutionary process, because males of some species present sexually dimorphic badges during courtship, whereas others do not exhibit such conspicuous signals but present lavish courtship behavior, including dynamic flight maneuvers. A comparison of these two groups within a single taxonomic family provides insight into the evolution of courtship signals and the corresponding behavior. Males of the closely related Empididae do not possess such badges. Within the super-family Empidoidea, we propose an evolutionary shift from dynamically courting and mating on the wing (in Empididae) to courting and mating on ground (in Dolichopodidae), accompanied by signaling through badge-waving. By comparing previously published data and observations on courtship behavior in Dolichopodidae, we present the hypothesis that the latter replaced the former energetically expensive behavior as a case of automimicry and sensory trap.
