Information about feeding habits and host-plants is given for 24 species of insects reared from the stem or leaves of wetland herbaceous monocots, primarily Carex lacustris Willd. and Phalaris arundinacea L., in southern Quebec. Nineteen species of Diptera in eight families (1 Dolichopodidae, 2 Otitidae, 1 Anthomyzidae, 1 Agromyzidae, 1 Chamaemyiidae, 1 Sphaeroceridae, 11 Chloropidae, 1 Scathophagidae), three Lepidoptera in the families Cosmopterigidae, Elachistidae, and Noctuidae, and two weevils (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) were reared from four species of host plants. Seven species are phytophagous primary invaders, thirteen are secondary invaders (mostly saprophagous) inside the burrows of primary invaders, two are predators of aphids and other invertebrates living on the leaves of the plants, and two have unknown feeding habits.

The oriental genus Mastigomyia becker (Diptera: Dolichopodidae).
Entomology Section, Australian Museum, 6 College Street, Sydney, NSW, 2000: danb@amsg.austmus.gov.au, Australia
Raffles-Bulletin-of-Zoology. [print] 2 July, 1999; 47 (1): 287-294.
The genus Mastigomyia Becker is redefined, and is a member of subfamily Sympycninae (Diptera: Dolichopodidae). The genus is based on male secondary sexual characters of the antenna: an elongate first flagellomere, which bears a highly reduced and bristle-like arista. Mastigomyia is known only from the Oriental region, and comprises four species, M. gratiosa Becker, from Taiwan, Laos and Japan (Ryukyus), M. anomalicerus (Hollis), n. comb., from Nepal, and two new species, M. trangensis from Thailand, and M. amami from the Ryukyus.

[Biodiversity in a natural brook originating at a lake outflow in the northern German lowlands (Unterer Schierenseebach, Schleswig-Holstein). An ecologically commented preliminary inventory of animal and plant species.]

Faunistisch-Oekologische-Mitteilungen-Supplement. [print] 2001;  (30): 5-79.
At present, our knowledge of the biodiversity, in other words the multitude of animal and plant species living in the running waters, is very insufficient. This is the case for the high-mountain and mountain brooks and in particular for the lowland brooks. Therefore, we started 25 years ago to investigate one of the brooks of the Northern German Lowlands, the Lower Schierensee Brook, and examined its flora and especially its fauna in the course of several ecologically oriented studies. The Lower Schierensee Brook was an ideal object for our studies, because it is one of the few lowland brooks, which is still relatively unimpaired by human influences, so that a biocoenosis typical for running waters in this location could be expected. The lower Schierensee Brook is located in the glacial landscape of the eastern Schleswig-Holstein. It is the outlet of a eutrophic lake and flows after 730 m into another lake. The upper lake causes an increasing pH-value and also an increasing temperature and oxygen concentration. Forest lines the beginning and end parts of the brook (Upper and Lower Forest Part) and shades the water. The woods lining the middle part of the brook have been felled more than half a century ago to create space for pastures. In every vegetation period dense stands of emerse macrophytes developed in the brook because of the unimpeded insolation. They suppressed the brook's current and took away the viability of the running-water biocoenosis. For that reason we planted several lines of alders (Alnus glutinosa) at both banks in the middle part of the Lower Schierensee Brook (the so-called Meadow Part) at the beginning of our studies in 1977. Within a few years the alders had grown enough to reduce the development of the macrophytes in the brook's bed and thereby securing the brooks current, so that a resettlement of rheobiontic and rheophilous organisms out of the Upper and Lower Forest Parts could start. At the beginning of the planting the vegetation of the brook's bed and both banks have been mapped, as well as the change of the vegetation caused by the growing trees and their shading. About 10 years ago the growing of the alders weakened. They were strongly attacked by alder leaf beetles (Agelastica alni; Chrysomelidae). Many alders died and were replaced by willows (Salix cinerea, Salix aurita) in fall 1997. In addition to the mapping of the Pteridophyta (6 species) and Spermatophyta(139 species) in the brook and on its banks the Diatomeae (Bacillariophyceae) of the Lower Schierensee Brook have been examined. They exist in 160 different species in the brook. Some of them come from the upper lake and are washed in great numbers into the brook, where they sink onto the ground and die. From the Lower Schierensee Brook's fauna only groups of Metazoa have been examined so far. The total number of metazoan species found in the brook is 612. All these species are for the first time compiled in this publication from many different and partly unpublished studies and presented together with ecological results. The Insecta show by far the greatest number of species. With 478 species they have a total share of 78.1% of the total number of metazoan species. The largest group within the Insecta are the Diptera with their 320 species, a share of 67% of all Insecta. The family with the by far most species within the insects and the Metazoa are the Chironomidae. 196 species of them could be found in the Lower Schierensee Brook, meaning that every third metazoan species is a chironomid. Within the Diptera the Ceratopogonidae with 60 species are the second largest and the Psychodidae with 17 species the third largest group. The four Nematocera families Pediciidae, Limonildae, Tipulidae, and Cylindrotomidae can be included into the brooks fauna only with a few species; in the alder forest adjoining the Lower Schierensee Brook many different species of these families could be caught, but their larvae live in habitats which do not belong to the brook itself. Also, of the Empididae (12 species) and the Dolichopodidae (10 species) only a few species can be counted to the brooks fauna. In the emergence traps even in aquatic locations imagines of many species of both families were caught, but they penetrated the traps from the outside, meaning that their larvae did not develop in aquatic or semiaquatic environments. Within the Insecta the Diptera are followed by the Coleoptera with 67, the Trichoptera with 38 and the Odonata with 26 species. The Ephemeroptera (12 species) and even more the Plecoptera (2 species) are of lesser importance in the Lower Schierensee Brook. This is one major difference between the lowland streams and the high-mountain and mountain streams. Except the Insecta the Mollusca (26 Gastropoda and 17 Bivalvia species), Oligochaeta (33 species), Hydrachnidia (19 species), and Pisces (17 species) are the most extensive groups. The individual animal groups are compared with other streams mainly of the North German Lowlands concerning their number of species. Several metazoan groups have not yet been examined in the Lower Schierensee Brook. Many different species can be expected in particular from the Nematoda and Rotatoria. It can be assumed that the total number of metazoan species in the Lower Schierensee Brook amount to 800-1000, so that the biodiversity is as high as in the other brooks in Central Europe, that have so far been examined intensively. In contrast to these other brooks the Lower Schierensee Brook has a length of only 730 m, so that an extremely high complexity and confinement of the environment structure must be assumed. Among the 612 metazoan species, that are known in the Lower Schierensee Brook so far, are 21 rheotypical elements of fauna. These are rheophious or rheobiontic species, that are susceptible to anthropogenic changes (brook's structure, water quality) and that demonstrate with their high numbers of occurrences the closeness to nature of the Lower Schierensee Brook. Many species of the Lower Schierensee Brook are part of the Red List of endangered species. The range of endangered species begins with snails (6 species) and mussels (9 species) and ends with fishes (6 species). Moreover, the Lower Schierensee Brook is a biotope for many rare and even extremely rare species; only the two snails Marstoniopsis scholtzi and Anisus vorticulus, the three mussels Pseudanodonta complanata, Unio crassus, and Pisidium pseudosphaerium, the ground bug Aphelocheirus aestivalis, and the fly Atrichops crassipes may be cited here.

Bark beetles (Scolytidae, Col.) and their insect bioregulators in mountain spruce stands.
Institute of Entomology, Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic, Ceske Budejovice; E-Mail: entu@entu.cas.cz, Czech Republic
Journal-of-Forest-Science-Prague. [print] 2001; 47 (Special Issue 2): 73-76.
The biodiversity and abundance of the bark beetles and their predators and parasitoids on spruce has been studied since 1998 in the area of Modrava. Among the 13 identified bark beetle species dominated: Polygraphus poligraphus, Crypturgus pusillus and Ips typographus. The most abundant predatory and parasitoid species included: Roptorocerus xylophagorum, Rhopalicus tutella, Cosmophorus klugii, Dendrosoter middendorffii (Hymenoptera, fam. Pteromalidae, Braconidae), Medetera signaticornis, Lonchea bruggeri (Diptera, fam. Dolichopodidae, Lonchaeidae), Placusa pumilio (Coleoptera, fam. Staphylinidae). The quantitative occurrence of bioregulators in samples varied from 7 to 83 % (100% = all insects in the sample). In the samples with high population density the bioregulators were able to reduce the bark beetles significantly.

Some wetland Diptera of a disused brick-pit.
Orchid House, Burridge, Axminster, Devon EX13 7DF, UK
British-Journal-of-Entomology-and-Natural-History. 2002 May; 15(1): 9-23
Diptera records were collated for several years of collecting at a disused brick-pit containing many temporary pools and a lake. The fauna included many uncommon species and a few coastal species whose presence is attributed to salinity from the clay. The numbers of Ephydridae and Dolichopodidae from areas with different hydrological characteristics are highest in areas of shallow pools and seasonal inundation and lowest at the shore of the lake. Species that are normally abundant in surrounding wetlands are scarce in the pit, suggesting that the low nutrient status of the water makes this site unusual in the nutrient-rich arable countryside of the Fens.

Evolution of the middle leg basal articulations in flies (Diptera).
Schmalhausen-Institute of Zoology, B. Chmielnicki str., 15, Kiev-30, 01601; E-Mail: leopup@vzb.pp.kiev.ua, Ukraine
Acta-Zoologica-Stockholm. [print] April, 2002; 83 (2): 125-147.
The morphology of the coxa and trochanter was studied in 205 species from 68 fly families to compare these structures with respect to ability to fly in a streamlined posture, with the middle legs pointing forward and pressed to the thorax. Only Brachycera are able to attain this posture. The forward turn of the coxa at this position is hindered by the junction of the coxa with the pleuron. Recovery of mobility is gained in two ways. (1) By reduction of the contact zone between coxa and pleurite, as in Asiloidea, Bombyloidea, and Empidoidea. Within these flies, the streamlined posture was recorded in Bombyliidae and in a robber-fly, Laphria flava. Others fly with their middle legs straddled laterally or trailing backwards. (2) Longitudinal splitting of the coxa into three coxites provides intracoxal mobility in most Tabanoidea and Cyclorrhapha. The hind and medial coxites rotate about the front coxite and change the coxo-trochanteral axis, thus compensating for restricted protraction. Separation of the hind coxite appears in primitive Tabanoidea, and a separate middle coxite was found in several families among the Nematocera. The streamlined posture was recorded in horse-flies, stratiomyids, and in many Cyclorrhapha except Micropezidae and Hippoboscidae. There is morphological evidence for a possible secondary fusion of coxites at least in Dolichopodidae and Opetidae as well as for the origin of Cyclorrhapha from a miniature ancestor.

Flight posture biomechanics of the middle legs in flies (Diptera).
Entomologicheskoe-Obozrenie. [print] 2000; 79 (2): 303-315.
Flight posture was recorded on tethered flying insects. Anatomical measurements were carried out on fresh insects or on preparations fixed in 70degree alcohol and macerated in 10 % NaOH. Middle legs in Nematocera, Rhagio, Empididae, Dolichopodidae, most of Asilidae slack behind or are staddled sidewards. Most of Brachycera press their fore and middle legs to the body in order to lessen their aerial resistance. The middle femur points up and backward, the tibia is bended ahead of the femur and points medially. The ability to attain the streamlined posture is related to composition of the middle coxa of movable sclerites and to the angle between the subcoxal axes (it must be over 90degree). Kinematic models of leg articulations were investigated. The complex structure of the middle coxa is the adaptation to the swift and versatile flight.

The majority of Dolichopodidae species collected on the Brandberg were trapped using light traps as opposed to Malaise traps and yellow pan traps. Eight Brandberg species represent only a small part of the Namibian fauna: Asyndetus virgatus Curran, Campsicnemus caffer Curran, Chrysotus inconspicuus Loew, Hydrophorus praecox Lehmann, Medetera capensis Curran, Medetera sp. nov., Sympycnus munroi Curran, Thrypticus kataevi Grichanov. They represent seven genera and four subfamilies: Diaphorinae, Hydrophorinae, Medeterinae and Sympycnynae. The numbers of individuals trapped were considerably more numerous in the surrounding Namib plains than on the Brandberg itself. Both recorded species of Medetera Fisher von Waldheim were only represented in samples from high altitudes.

Fiberglass mesh enclosures (1 X 1 m2) in a Typha angustifolia L. marsh were employed to examine the effects of clay additions on the resident macroinvertebrate communities. Total invertebrate density, insect density, and number of insect families decreased significantly by 33%, 37%, and 17%, respectively, in enclosures receiving sediment. More specifically, incoming clay adversely affected densities of Coleoptera larvae, Diptera larvae, Megaloptera larvae, Odonata larvae, Pelecypoda, and Gastropoda. Densities of specific families within the Diptera (larvae) and Coleoptera were also affected; Dolichopodidae, Stratiomyidae, Hydrophilidae, Tabanidae, Dytiscidae adults, and Scirtidae larvae decreased significantly in numbers in sedimented enclosures. In contrast, the effect of sedimentation on Carabidae (adults and larvae) and Dytiscidae larval densities varied significantly with time, whereby densities were higher in the sedimented treatment only for the initial two months of the study. Densities of predator-engulfer, collector-filterer, and scraper feeding groups were reduced in sedimented plots by 28%, 44%, and 27%, respectively. Significant short- and long-term increases in turbidity and suspended solids in enclosures treated with clay, as well as sediment deposition, were probably responsible for changes in the invertebrate communities.

Three different rearing methods for predacious Diptera of genus Medetera Fisher von Waldheim (Dolichopodidae), found in greenhouses in Lombardia - Italy, are described. The first one is the modification of the method already used to rear Coenosia Meigen (Diptera Muscidae). The others have come from the necessity to resolve some questions arose during the test and also to simplify much more the alimentary chain to make much more easy an eventual mass rearing.

Diptera of the genus Medetera Fisher von Waldheim (Dolichopodidae) are known chiefly for being forest species preying on Scolitidae (Coleoptera). This research was carried out to better understand the polyphagy and predation activity of the adults found for the first time in some greenhouses of Lombardia (Italy). Many data about their ethology have been collected to estimate their potentiality as beneficials in pest biological control in such artificial environments.

Histological structure of cibarial pump and cephalic foregut in Asilomorpha adults (Diptera). 5. Empididae and Dolichopodidae.
Severtsov Institute of Ecology and Evolution, Russian Academy of Sciences, Moscow, 117071; E-Mail: sevin@orc.ru, Russia
Zoologicheskii-Zhurnal. [print] February, 2002; 81 (2): 212-220.
URLJ:  http://www.maik.rssi.ru/journals/zooeng.htm
Both Empididae and Dolichopodidae have a well-developed cibarial pump and differ drastically from most Asilomorpha by the structure of the cephalic foregut. In species of both families, a portion of the foregut, topographically corresponding to the pharynx, is oesophagus-like: its intima is nonsclerotized, thin and folded; lumen cross-section is rounded; epithelial and muscular layers are well developed. A partial reduction or complete disappearance of pharyngeal dilators occurs. In Empis, Hilara and Rhamphomyia (Empidudae), pharyngeal dilators remain, but are weak. In Platypalpus (Tachydrominae) and Dolichopus species they are absent. At the same time, degeneration (up to disappearance) of pre- and postpharyngeal sphincters takes place. The pharyngeal and oesophageal portions of the foregut in Platypalpus and Dolichopus may be distinguished only by details of their wall structure. The data obtained suggest that the type of the cephalic food canal characteristic of all Cyclorrhapha originates already in higher Asilomorpha. "Disappearance" of the pharynx is likely a result of its gradual likening to the oesophagus, but not of its reduction.

Dolichopodid biodiversity and site quality assessment of reed marshes and grasslands in Belgium (Diptera: Dolichopodidae).
Department of Entomology, Royal Belgian Institute of Natural Sciences, Vautierstraat 29, B-1000, Brussels, Belgium
Journal-of-Insect-Conservation. 2001 June; 5(2): 99-116
The conservation value of grassland and reed marsh habitats in Belgium was determined on the basis of dolichopodid communities (Diptera: Dolichopodidae). Four grassland and one reed marsh sites within the 'Bourgoyen-Ossemeersen' Nature Reserve (B.O.) (Ghent) were sampled with white water traps from March 1993 until March 1994. Subsequently, these soil faunas were compared with those of reed marsh habitats in 'Het Meetjeslandse Krekengebied' (M.K.) sampled in 1990. Comparisons of species communities were carried out by means of multivariate analysis techniques. The DCA and CCA on the B.O. sites produced a clear separation between the grassland and the reed marsh communities. Light intensity and soil humidity were among the most important factors determining species distributions. The comparison between the B.O. and M.K. communities revealed that sampling sites were clustered according to their geographical location rather than to habitat type. Overall species richness and diversity was not significantly different between grasslands and reed marshes. However, conservation quality estimates of the sites using the Site Conservation Quality Index (SCQI) indicated that reed marshes comprise a considerably larger number of rare and Red Data Book species. Moreover, besides typical reed marsh-inhabiting species, reed marshes also house species with other ecological affinities sometimes in rather high abundance. As a result, reed marshes are considered highly valuable for the survival of several wetland dolichopodid species.

An exercise in characterizing a habitat on the basis of its dolichopodid community (Diptera Dolichopodidae).
Dept of Entomology, Royal Belgian Institute of Natural Sciences (KBIN), Vautierstraat 29, B-1000, Brussels: mp@iwt.be, luc.de.bruyn@instnat.be, Belgium
Bulletin-de-la-Societe-Royale-Belge-d'Entomologie. [print] Juli-December, 2000; 136 (7-12): 185-191.
A habitat characterization was made by the first author on the basis of samples of Dolichopodidae (Diptera) from an unknown habitat within "De Oude Landen" Nature Reserve (Ekeren, Belgium) delivered by the second author. This was subsequently matched to a habitat description also provided by the second author. When considering only the most abundant species, it was suggested that the habitat consisted of open as well as covered sites with a very wet soil or pools in the latter. Taking into account the less abundant but more stenotopic species as well, the sampling habitat could be described as a mosaic of humid marshlands or reed marshes and canopied habitats with open water showing muddy banks. The final comparison between both descriptions revealed a considerable correspondence. Some aspects of trapping methodology and entomological inventories are discussed.

Reproductive success of the introduced pine shoot beetle, Tomicus piniperda (L.) (Coleoptera, Scolytidae) on selected North American and European conifers.
Faculty of Forestry, University of Toronto, Toronto, ON, M5S 3B3, Canada
Proceedings-of-the-Entomological-Society-of-Ontario. 2000 December; 131: 113-121
The introduced pine shoot beetle, Tomicus piniperda (L.) (Coleoptera, Scolytidae), constitutes a potential threat to commercially important native conifer species. Reproductive success of the beetle was compared between its primary host, Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.), three native pines, specifically jack (P. banksiana Lamb.), red (P. resinosa Ait.), and white pine (P. strobus L.), and two larch species, eastern larch (Larix laricina (Du Roi) K. Koch) and European larch (L. decidua Mill.) using naturally infested trap logs during 1997 and 1998. No female beetles initiated galleries on either larch species. In contrast, red and jack pine were readily colonized by the parental generation and produced large numbers of offspring. Greater numbers of beetles were produced per m2 (mean[plus/minus]S.E.) on red pine (733.2[plus/minus]29.1 and 1410.9[plus/minus]49.8 offspring per m2) than on Scots pine (240.1[plus/minus]56.8 and 597.8[plus/minus]570.7 offspring per m2) in 1997 and 1998, respectively. White pine was colonized by significantly fewer female beetles (110.5[plus/minus]28.6 galleries per m2) than was Scots pine (276.3[plus/minus]16.2 galleries per m2), and low numbers of offspring were produced per m2 on white pine (139.0[plus/minus]41.6 offspring per m2), suggesting that this pine is less well suited for reproduction. Beetle emergence per gallery was high on red pine (4.4[plus/minus]1.2 and 19.2[plus/minus]1.9 emergence holes/gallery in 1997 and 1998, respectively) and jack pine (1.9[plus/minus]0.3 and 19.9[plus/minus]6.5 in 1997 and 1998, respectively). Parasitism by native hymenopterans and predation by native dipterans differed significantly between the four pine species, with high parasitism levels on jack pine in both years (25.3 and 14.9% in 1997 and 1998, respectively) and very low levels on red pine (less than 2% in both years). Our work shows that T. piniperda readily colonizes at least two native pine species and that these hosts can support the production of a large number of offspring beetles, thus confirming previous North American and European research. These results highlight the potential impact of this exotic beetle on the future management of red and jack pine stands.

Enchytraeidae as prey of Dolichopodidae, recent and in Baltic amber (Oligochaeta; Diptera).
Zoologisches Forschungsinstitut und Museum Alexander Koenig, Adenauerallee 160, D-53113, Bonn, Germany
Bonner-Zoologische-Beitraege. [print] Dezember, 2001; 50 (1-2): 89-101.
A piece of Baltic amber with two inclusions, an enchytraeid worm fragment and a dolichopodid fly, is described. The morphological account of the enchytraeid fragment includes details on number, shape and distribution of the chaetae. It is the first detailed description of an oligochaete in Baltic amber. Field observations of recent Dolichopodidae preying on Enchytraeidae are reported. The available evidence suggests that the fossil worm fragment was carried into the resin by the fly as its prey. Thus, this piece provides a fossil record of predation by Dolichopodidae on Enchytraeidae, and points to a plausible explanation as to how the oligochaete worms found as rare inclusions in Baltic amber could have been trapped in the resin.

A taxonomic and biogeographic review of the invertebrates of the Central Eastern Rainforest Reserves of Australia (CERRA) World Heritage Area, and adjacent regions.
Department of Entomology, Australian Museum, 6 College Street, Sydney, NSW 2010, Australia
Technical-Reports-of-the-Australian-Museum. 2002; 16: 1-208
The Gondwanan World Heritage rainforests of Australia's subtropics support an invertebrate biota that reflects diverse evolutionary histories. A high proportion of the fauna is identifiably autochthonous in origin. Four major generalizations, as to the invertebrate "values" of the Central Eastern Rainforest Reserves of Australia (CERRA) World Heritage Area, can be derived from the taxonomic and biogeographic information acquired during this project: (a) The CERRA region, loosely defined as that area extending from the Barrington Tops, northern New South Wales, to southeast Queensland, is a significant zoogeographic refugium in terms of the evolution of Australian invertebrate taxa. Examples occur extensively within the taxa listed in Appendix 1 and are discussed in the Overview. Particular examples are the terrestrial snail family Charopidae, the freshwater snail family Hydrobiidae, the beetle taxa Adeliini, Cyphaleini, Coprini, Denticollinae, Rutelinae, Melolonthinae, Lucanidae, flightless beetles in the family Carabidae, the fly family Drosophilidae and dolichopodid subfamily Sciapodinae, parastacid crayfish, aradid bugs, the Onychophoran family Peripatopsidae and mygalomoph spiders. (b) The CERRA region includes a high proportion of taxa with "Gondwanan" or "Old Southerr Endemic" affiliations. This group includes taxa with relatives on other Gondwanan landmasses such as South America, Africa and the Indian subcontinent, and those restricted to Australasia. Some taxa art restricted to Australia but with close relatives in either New Caledonia or New Zealand, but not both Within known ranges, individual taxa can be widespread or relictual. Examples of  "southern" fauna exist across all taxonomic levels-from species to that of subphylum. Notable higher taxonomic rank examples are the megascolecid earthworms, mygalomorph and amphectid spiders, harvestmen in the family Acropsopilionidae, the mite family Pheroliodidae, and the terrestrial snail families Athoracophoridae, Charopidae, Cystopeltidae and Rhytididae. The insects are well represented, and include the beetle family Phloeostichidae and tribes Pamborini, Migadopini, Adeliini, Epistomentini and Stigmoderini, flies in the family Pelecorhynchidae, the subfamily Arachnocampinae and the tribe Pangoniini, the moth families Hepialidae and Micropterigidae, the "birdwing" butterfly genus Ornithoptera, the hemipteran bug families Idiostolidae and Peloridiidae, the neuropteran lacewing subfamilies Kempyninae and Stenosmylinae, ambositrine and hyptiogastrine wasps, and the plecopteran families Austroperlidae, Eustheniidae and Gripopterygidae. (c) There is a substantial level of endemism within the fauna. This is very high at the species and genus level, and many of these are currently known only from single localities or from geographically restricted ranges within the CERRA region. Instances of generic and species endemism are particularly high in the snail families Hydrobiidae and Charopidae, the earthworm family Megascolecidae, the crayfish family Parastacidae, the subphylum Onychophora, and the spider suborder Mygalomorphae. Examples within the insects are the fly families Dolichopodidae, Platystomatidae, Exeretonevridae,Pelecorhynchidae and Tipulidae, the beetle tribes Onthophagini and Scarabaeini, the beetle family Carabidae and subfamily Melolonthinae, australembiid webspinners, cicadelloid and mezirine Hemiptera, oechophorine moths, and the lacewing family Hemerobiidae and the subfamily Kempyninae. The beetle family Rhinorhipidae, and the mite family Platyameridae, are restricted to the CERRA region. (d) Significant invertebrate heritage values are not restricted to taxa inhabiting rainforest vegetation. The intervening matrix of sclerophyll forests, and more rarely woodlands, shrub, heath and swamp complexes, and associated freshwater ecosystems, sustain distinctive non-rainforest invertebrate heritage values. Important higher taxa inhabiting these ecosystems are ruteline "Christmas beetles" in the tribe Anoplognathini, the family Elateridae, the speciose buprestid genus Castiarina, the tenebrionid tribe Heleini, the fly genera Pelecorhynchus and Trichophthalma, and athoracophorid, helicarionid andglacidorbid snails. Limestone outcrops are important focal points of terrestrial snail endemism and diversity. Cave systems are important for the conservation of associated, often endemic or localized, arachnid and insect faunas.
