Grichanov, I.Ya. A check list of genera of the family Dolichopodidae (Diptera)
Abstract. An alphabetical list of 200 valid genera in the family Dolichopodidae (Diptera) is compiled, of which 65 genera were described in XVIII – XIX century, 67 in 1901 – 1950 and 69 genera in 1951 – 1997.
Key words: Diptera, Dolichopodidae, catalog, generic names.
Introduction
The known world fauna of Dolichopodidae is very extensive, with about 6000 species. These mostly predatory flies are distributed all over the world including tropics and high-latitude islands. Many regional catalogs of Dolichopodidae faunas were published within recent decades, such as lists for the following zoogeographical regions: Nearctic (Foote et al. 1965); Palearctic (Grichanov & Negrobov 1979; Negrobov 1991); Neotropics (Robinson 1970, 1975); Afrotropics (Dyte & Smith 1980); Orient (Dyte 1975); Australasia and Oceania (Bickel & Dyte 1989; Bickel 1992, 1994). The last catalog of fossil dolichopodid flies was published by Evenhuis (1994). Now they need synthesis, supplements, and unification. A great number of new genera was described during the last 15 years, and many others were placed in synonymy. Grichanov (1996) listed alphabetically all generic names in the family Dolichopodidae of the World. Valid, invalid and suppressed names, nomina dubia, nuda et oblita were included. This paper is the next effort to compile a world database to valid genera for one of the largest dipteran family.
An alphabetical list of 200 valid genera with all synonyms in the family Dolichopodidae (Diptera) is compiled, of which 65 genera were described in XVIII – XIX century, 67 genera in 1901 – 1950 and 69 genera in 1951 – 1997. Ten following authors gave names of about 130 valid genera: Bickel (21), Loew (18), Becker (15), Parent (14), Robinson (14), Grootaert and Meuffels (12), Mik (11), Dyte (11), Bigot (8) and Aldrich (8). Subgenera are placed here in synonymy to corresponding genera, although the author of this paper considers many of them as true taxa of intrageneric rank (e.g., Prohercostomus Grichanov 1997). The following generic names are not included in the list: (1) genera from other families temporarily kept some dolichopodid species; (2) genera transferred incorrectly from other dipteran families; (3) misspellings and errors. For references see above mentioned regional catalogs and recent volumes of “Zoological Record”. I would appreciate any correction and supplement to this list.
